Create your account and your company
In five minutes, you create your account, describe your company and your 7-day free trial begins. No credit card is required.
Create your account
Open To Bill and click Sign up, or go straight to the sign-up page.
Enter your First name, your Last name, your Email and a Password of at least 8 characters and at most 72 (slightly fewer with accented letters). The eye at the end of the field shows what you type.
Click Create an account (1). As the sentence above the button says, creating your account means you accept the terms and conditions and confirm that you have read the privacy policy; their links open in a new tab. You are signed in straight away and receive a welcome email, in the language of the sign-up page, then the “Confirm your email address” email (see below).
When the Continue with Google button is offered, it creates your account with your Google name and address. If the address already has an account, To Bill tells you and offers to choose a new password.
Confirm your email address
Straight after you sign up, To Bill sends you the “Confirm your email address” email, in the language of the sign-up page. Confirming is optional: you use To Bill straight away, without waiting for it. You only need it to invite someone: a colleague, your fiduciary or, from the cockpit, a member or a client of the firm. Once your address is confirmed, team invitations sent to it show up in To Bill and you accept them in one click (see Invite your team).
- Open the email and click Confirm my email address. The link is valid for 24 hours and works only once; if you ask for a new email, only the latest link works.
- The Email address confirmed page opens. Click Continue to To Bill. The link also works on another device, without being signed in: the page then offers Sign in.
As long as your address is not confirmed, a discreet reminder shows under the top bar, and already above the Your company screen: “Confirm your email address: we sent a link to … It is optional.”
- Resend the email (1) sends a new link. To Bill sends one a minute at most, and five a day.
- The cross (2) hides the reminder for good, on all your devices. You can still confirm your address later, from My account (see Your personal account).
Only accounts created since this confirmation arrived see the reminder. An older account never sees it; it can confirm its address in My account, if it wishes. If you sign up with Continue with Google, your address counts as confirmed when Google says it is verified: no email and no reminder.
If someone opened an account at your address with a password and never confirmed it (by signing up, by creating a firm in the cockpit, or because a company entered your address there), your first sign-in with Google (or Apple, in the mobile app) gives that account back to you: the address is confirmed, that password stops working and the devices signed in with it are signed out. To also sign in with a password, choose one with Forgot password?. To Bill tells you once, on a computer as in the mobile app, in the This account is now yours window: “An account already existed with this address, never confirmed. It is now yours, and the old password no longer works.” Got it closes it, on all your devices.
The link no longer works
- This link has expired: the link is more than 24 hours old, or a more recent email replaced it. If you are signed in, click Get a new link: a new email goes out. Otherwise, sign in, then use Resend the email in the reminder, or Send the confirmation email in My account.
- This link is not valid: the link is incomplete, for example split in two by your email program. Copy the whole link from the email, or ask for a new one.
- Address already confirmed: there is nothing more to do.
Describe your company
To Bill guides you through two screens: Your company, then What do you want to do with To Bill?. Nothing is created before the last button, and you can change everything afterwards in the settings.
Your company. Is a team invitation waiting for your address? To Bill tells you at the top of this screen: see Invite your team. Otherwise, type your company’s name, or its UID number: To Bill searches the commercial register as you type. Choose it in the list: one click fills in the UID number, the legal form, the address, the postcode, the town, the canton and whether it is registered for VAT, showing where this information comes from. Check it, correct what has changed, then click Continue.
Your company is not in the register, for example a sole proprietorship that is not registered? Click Enter my company by hand and fill in the same form: name, legal form, address, UID number (1), postcode, town, canton, the company’s email (your account’s to begin with) and an optional phone number. If your company is registered for VAT, switch on Registered for VAT (2): the UID number becomes mandatory, and your invoices will show your VAT number and VAT at the standard rate of 8.1%.
What do you want to do with To Bill? Invoice is included. Also tick what applies to you: Keep my books (1), Run payroll, Track my time and projects. If a fiduciary keeps your books, tick My fiduciary keeps my books and enter their email: they will receive an invitation with the “Fiduciary” role (you can also invite them later, from Users). The invitation is only sent if your email address is confirmed, which is the case with Google or Apple. Otherwise, To Bill shows Your fiduciary was not invited: confirm your address with the link in the email you received, then invite them from Users.
At the bottom of the same screen, To Bill lets you know that it will email you tips now and then to make the most of it, and its news. The Receive our tips and news switch is on: turn it off if you do not want them. You can also say no later, in My account, or with the unsubscribe link in each email.
Click Finish and start the trial (2). To Bill creates your company, starts your free trial and switches on what you ticked. If you chose accounting, opening your books comes next (see Turn on accounting); otherwise the Dashboard opens.
The language of your documents follows the language of your screen and amounts are in Swiss francs; you can change both in Settings › Application settings. You are asked for your logo (a PNG or JPG image of 5 MB at most) and your QR-bill account later, when you need them: in the Get started card on the dashboard, and when you send your first invoice. See Set up the QR-bill.
A question, later on
Once your first invoice is sent, or after a few days, a dashboard card asks How did you discover To Bill? Answer it, click Later, or close it with the cross.
The trial lasts 7 days, with the whole Business subscription. For what comes next, see The subscription and credits, then Set up your company.
On the To Bill home page, Sign in tab, enter your Email and your Password, then click Sign in. You stay signed in for 30 days in this browser. Your email address can be typed with or without capitals, it is the same account; in the password, capitals count.
Forgotten password
- Click Forgot password? (1).
- Enter your email and click Reset password.
- Open the “Password Reset” email and click the link. It is valid for one hour and works only once; a new request cancels the previous links.
- Enter your new password twice, at least 8 characters and at most 72 (a few fewer with accented letters), and confirm. You return to the sign-in page.
Too many attempts
After 10 wrong passwords in 15 minutes with the same email address, To Bill blocks signing in to that account for a quarter of an hour, even with the right password and wherever you try from; other accounts are not affected. A successful sign-in resets the account. Wait for the quarter of an hour to pass, then try again. If you have forgotten your password, use Forgot password?: the new one works as soon as the block ends.
Add another company
Do you run several companies? One account is enough.
At the top of the left-hand menu, under the logo, click your company’s name. The My Applications menu lists your companies.
Click Create New Application. The same two screens open. The new company is only created with Finish and start the trial; before that, Back to the dashboard leaves without creating anything.
To switch from one company to another, choose it in this same menu.
Each company has its own data, its own users and its own subscription, with its own 7-day trial.
Legal basis
- The UID number identifies every company registered in Switzerland; it is also the basis of the VAT number: FTA, Enterprise identification number (UID).
- The UID number is checked with its check digit, which To Bill works out as you type: Federal Statistical Office, UID register.
