Welcome to To Bill
To Bill is the invoicing and accounting software for Swiss SMEs. This guide shows you the main screen, where to find help and your first steps.
What To Bill does for you
- Invoice: quotes, invoices with a QR-bill, reminders, collections and unpaid invoices.
- Keep track of your expenses: recording, receipts read automatically, supplier invoices to pay.
- Keep your books: your invoices, payments and expenses are posted for you, VAT included.
- Pay your employees and track your time, if you need to.
Accounting, payroll and time tracking are modules: you switch them on when you need them. See Switch on modules.
The main screen
After you sign in, To Bill opens on the Dashboard: your key figures (revenue, collected, overdue, result), the Invoiced and collected chart month by month, Unpaid by age, recent activity and your quick actions. You choose the period at the top (Last 12 months to begin with); Customise chooses which figures are shown and in what order. Every figure and every bar opens the matching list.
On a computer, the whole dashboard fits in the window, with no page scrolling: the chart and the unpaid invoices take the height available, and Recent activities shows the latest lines that fit; View all opens the full list. In a short window, on a tablet or a phone, the blocks follow one another and the page scrolls.
The figures are in your company’s currency, most often the franc, all of them: overdue and unpaid invoices by age as well as revenue, and also the result, cash, VAT and salaries, which the books keep in francs. An amount in another currency is converted as in the invoice editor, at the official Swiss customs (FOCBS) rate of its document’s day, or the last one published before; an amount still owed, at the rate of the period’s last day. When that rate is older than the document’s day, To Bill says so under the figure, for example “EUR rate: last known rate, from 06.10.2026”. An amount in a currency for which there is no rate at all is not counted: it is shown separately, for example “+ SEK 5'000.00 not converted”. The same goes for the chart and for unpaid invoices by age. The VAT reminder and the accounting’s Unpaid list stay in francs, the currency of the books and of the FTA.
Under each figure, its change against the period compared. When that period is at zero, there is nothing to compare: no change is shown. When it is too close to zero (under 100 in your currency, or under a hundredth of the figure shown), a percentage would mean nothing (“+42'897 %”): To Bill shows “—”.
- Your company. If you manage several, switch from one to another here.
- The menu. Pages are grouped by theme: Sales (clients, quotes, invoices, credit notes, items), Purchases (expenses and supplier invoices To pay) and Payments (collections and, with accounting, unpaid invoices). Then come Time & projects, Payroll and Accounting, when these modules are switched on. Clicking a theme’s title collapses it. At the bottom: Settings and Help. The + next to an entry creates a new document directly.
- The search. Click it or press ⌘K (Ctrl+K on Windows) to find a client, an invoice, an amount or a page, and to run an action. See Find anything with search.
- Copilot and help. On every page, the Copilot answers your questions, with its sources, and prepares draft quotes and invoices. The ? opens the help for the screen you are on.
- Your account. Your name opens your account menu: My account (your name, your password, the language and appearance of To Bill), Subscription, Users, Drive and Sign out. See Your personal account.
To save space, collapse the menu with the button at the top, next to the logo, or with the [ key (⌘B / Ctrl+B). The other shortcuts are in Keyboard shortcuts.
Finding help
This documentation answers your questions, screen by screen:
- Help, at the bottom of the menu, opens the documentation in your language.
- The ? at the top right opens a small menu: Guided tour of this page walks you through the screen step by step, Read the guide opens the guide for the screen you are on, Keyboard shortcuts lists them. The first time you sign in on a computer, the dashboard tour starts by itself.
- In the search, Guide to this page does the same.
- Frequently asked questions are in the FAQ, and the words of Swiss accounting in the glossary.
On your phone
To Bill also works in your phone’s browser. The menu opens with the button at the top left, the search with the magnifying glass. Lists become cards, and their filters open at the bottom of the screen.
For the To Bill mobile app, see Install the To Bill app and sign in.
