Switch on modules
To Bill starts simple: clients, quotes, invoices, expenses and collections. Three modules add what your company needs, at no extra cost on the subscription: Accounting, Payroll, and Time & projects.
Before you start
- Only the company’s Administrator can switch a module on or off. Other users see the state of the modules and the message Only your company’s administrator can switch this module on or off.
- The subscription must be active (or the trial in progress).
The three modules
Open Settings › Modules. Each card presents a module and its state.
| Module | What it adds | In the menu |
|---|---|---|
| Accounting (beta) | Your books kept automatically from your invoices, payments and expenses: journal, balance sheet, income statement, VAT, year-end closing | Accounting, after Payroll, and Unpaid under Payments |
| Payroll (1) | Employees, the monthly payroll, payslips, the payment file and salary certificates, at the year’s official rates | Payroll, after Payments |
| Time & projects (2) | The timer and weekly time entry, projects with a budget and an hourly rate, invoicing of hours | The Time & projects theme, with Time and Projects, after Sales |
Switch on a module
On the module’s card, click Switch on.
The module is active straight away for the whole team: a message confirms it, for example Payroll is on: its menu is in the sidebar.
Open the module from the menu, or with Open payroll / Open time tracking on its card.
To get going: Turn on payroll, Turn on time and project tracking.
Payroll and Swissdec
You still file the returns with the funds yourself: To Bill is not Swissdec-certified. It works out the contributions and the tax at source, but does not send salary data to the funds and the tax administration (ELM).
Accounting
Accounting is not switched on with one click: an assistant first checks your data and shows you your books before opening them. On its card, click Start (about 8 minutes; a company that has no documents yet opens its books in a single screen). Until it is active, the administrator also sees Accounting, marked New, in the menu, after payments. Follow the guide Turn on accounting.
Once the books are open, accounting stays on: it cannot be switched off, so that your books stay complete.
Switch off a module
On the module’s card, click Switch off.
Confirm: the window reminds you what happens.
The module’s menu disappears for the whole team. Nothing is deleted: employees, payrolls, payslips, projects and hours come back if you switch it on again.
Payroll cannot be switched off while a payroll is in progress: To Bill asks you to finalise or delete it first, with See the payroll.
What about artificial intelligence?
The AI features (reading receipts, posting suggestions, the copilot) are not a module: you set them in Settings › AI. See The AI assistant.
